Korean War vet directed Fayette Co. veterans office

Charles R. Vernon, 62, of Garards Fort, died Thursday, November 12, 1998, in Lawnwood Medical Center, Fort Pierce, Fla.

He was born December 1, 1935, in Garards Fort, a son of the late Frank Vernon and Dorothy Headlee Vernon of Garards Fort.

Mr. Vernon was a retired southern facilities manager for National City Bank Corp.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving as a technical sergeant, and had served as Fayette County Veterans Affairs director in the mid-1970s.

Mr. Vernon was a former auditor of Greene Township, founder of YMCA Teen Center in San Antonio, Texas, and a member and past deacon at John Corbly Memorial Baptist Church, Garards Fort.

On October 20, 1955, he married Constance Kennedy, who survives. Deceased are a son, Ronald, who died in infancy; a brother, Billy, who died in infancy; and a grandson, Anthony Vernon Magerko.
