February 21, 1866 ----------------------------- Last week a man named Thomas Rose, who has been in our County jail for some time, for the crime of stealing cloth; and James Seals, who has also been there since December Court, on conviction of assault and battery, made their exit from prison, and have now fled to parts unknown. It seems that the workmen, who had been repairing the prison cells, had imprudently left some of their tools in the reach of the prisoners, which they availed themselves of, and procured their release by prying out a stone from the East end of the jail. The aperture through which the prisoners escaped was made by the displacement of a large stone, which filled an opening which was formerly a window. The truth is our jail is, and has been for some time, in a deplorable condition. Scarcely any effort is required by an ingenious man to extricate himself from its walls, almost without tools. Some one remarking about this affair, said to us, that Rose and Seals had fallen out of the jail. The remark was intended, like Artemus Ward's sayings, to be a [unreadable], but, indeed it was not far from the truth. In 1856 he made a public profession of Religion and united with the Carmichaels Cumberland Presbyterian Church, since which, he has highly adorned his profession. For me to attempt to set forth his moral and religious character as it deserves, would be, in the community where he is known, a work of supereogation. Suffice it to say, he lived the life of a Christian, and, when the Master called for him, he was fully prepared to die his death. He leaves an aged companion and three sons behind to follow his pious example and share his peaceful death. HIS PASTOR. May 16, 1866 --------------------------------------- Marriages. On the 27th May, 1866, at the residence of Mrs. Sarah Johnson, in Jackson tp., Mrs. CATHERINE HOOK, aged 79 [?] years, 3 months and 19 days. DIED - In Waynesburg, Pa., on Friday June 8th, 1866, a colored or 'mulatto' woman named PENDY MILES, aged about one hundred years. The deceased, then a slave, was brought from Muddy Creek near Carmichaels to this place, by John Boreman, Esq., the first Clerk of the Court of Greene County, and by him manumitted at his death. The writer is not aware of the precise year that Mr. Boreman removed to this locality, but it is understood that it was previous to the erection of the first house in the limits now included in the borough, and Mr. B. made his first residence in a log cabin, a short distance over the hill on the run, on the north side of the now town of Waynesburg; the present site of the town being then a forest - a log cabin, however, being erected where the present 'Slater' house now stands. PENDY MILES, for the past two generations had been one of the respected 'institutions' of our town. Being an excellent housekeeper, nurse and cook, in her active daysher services were considered almost a necessity on all extra occasions, such as sickness, weddings &c., and by those unfortunate gentlemen denominated 'Old Bachs,' who were somewhat fastidious, and prided themselves on the immaculate whiteness and polish of their linen, PENDY's services were deemed indispensable. For a great number of years she has occupied her own little home, allowed her through the generosity of one of our kind-hearted citizens, and when the accumulation of years deprived her of her ability to maintain herself, every one felt it a privilege to contribute his or her mite toward her support, so that PENDY never felt the presence of want. She was the particular object of the care of many of the good ladies of our town, and but few days passed, probably for years, that her table was not supplied with a good dinner, through their kindness and attention. 'AUNT PENDY,' as she was generally called, was irreproachable in character, a consistent church member and christian, and through a long life had the respect and esteem of all who knew her, and the record of her death will be read by hundreds of former residents of this place and vicinity, now scattered in every part of our wide spread county with emotions of sorrow. At his residence in Richhill township, Greene county, Pa., on Sunday the 26th day of August, 1866, ALEXANDER BURNS, aged fifty-six years. "The ways of Providence are unsearchable and past finding out." Wasted by disease, he sank into the arms of death, not unwillingly, for his dying declaration attests that he died in the "triumph of living faith." "An honest man - the noblest work of God" - has passed from among us; and deeply do we mourn his untimely loss. He was a good citizen, and we bow with humble submission, feeling that we can ill-afford to spare him. A kind husband, and an affectionate and indulgent father, his family will deeply mourn his departure. But why mourn for the dead who "die in the Lord!" He has gone to that land "Where sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more." September 12, 1866 --------------------------------------- Marriages. MARTIN to Miss CAROLINE CROUSE all of Center township, Greene Co., Pa. October 17, 1866 --------------------------------------- DIED, July 25th, 1866, Mr. Francis McClelland of Cumberland township, Greene Co., Pa., aged 95 years and 23 days. The deceased was born July 3d, 1771, near Wilmington, Delaware. When about five or six years old, in company with his father's family and in the sytle of pioneer travel then common, he crossed the mountains and settled in this county. His location here was coincident in date with the year of American Declaration of Independence, and was accompanied with the dangers and hardships peculiar to that early day. With many of the historical incidents and with the names of many of the prominentn actors who figured in the days of the Revolution and of subsequent time, Mr. McClelland was familiar and up to a recent date could recall them with much facility. Though too young himself to take an active part in the struggle for Independence, yet some of his kindred were active participants. Few persons now living ever had the pleasure of seeing him whom Americans delight to call the father of his country. That pleasure belonged to Mr. McClelland. In the political affairs of the nation, he was accustomed to take a lively interest, esteeming it his imperative duty to take part in all pending important elections. With the early settlement of western Pennsylvania and adjacent regions he was quite conversant and could relate many adventures connected with Indian incursions and predatory warfare, the whiskey insurrection, and other events of historic interest. Of pious parentage, it was the privilege of the deceased to enjoy early religious training as preliminary to the actual possession of that piety which afterward developed itself in his life. From information furnished by his son, who for many years has been his main earthly dependence, it appears that in the 19th year of his age, under the ministry of Rev. Robert Finley, a minister from North Carolina, he was awakened to a sense of his lost condition as a sinner, and led to indulge hope in Christ. The theme of discourse at the time of his awakening was, "If any man love not our Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema, maranatha." On making a public profession of his faith, Mr. McClelland united with the Presbyterian Church of New Providence, which relation, including a period of 76 years, he continued to sustain up to the time of his death. Having in former years possessed quite a passion and taste for sacred music, Mr. McClelland became a professed instructor in that important branch of science, and was for many years, the honored procenter in New Providence church. In the service of Song he never lost interest up to the close of his life, but was able to repeat with much apparent interest portions of what he had formerly learned. Compared with that of most other christians, the earthly pilgrimage of the deceased was protracted. But there is an end of the longest journey. Having safely led him along through each perplexing path of life the Good Shepherd, has at length called him to sweeter melodies and holier joys in that land "Where with the good and blest. Those whom he loved most and best, He shall forever rest, In Heaven his home." J. M. October 17, 1866 --------------------------------------- GOOD LAND FOR SALE. YOUNKIN and Miss MARGARET EVE BRADEN, both of Richhill tp. Daniel was a soldier of the Union, and as we see still maintains his principles - by practice - he was a member of Co. B, 1st Va. Cavalry, until discharged for wounds he received from the fall of his horse; after his recovery, he enlisted in a Va. Regt., where he served until the close of the war, or even longer, for he was sent to the North-West, to fight 'Red-Skins' - and after being in eighteen Staters, and several Territories, came to the conclusion that the 'State of Matrimony' was the only true State to the Union, and so plighted his vows and took the Oath. As Adam in the morning of his life - his loneliness did grieve. Till waking from a lenghtened sleep, - He found a charming Eve. So Daniel from the Lion's den, and all wild war's alarms - Finds all his sorrows have an end - In his dear Eve's charms. At his residence, near Mt. Morris, Perry tp., Greene Co., Pa., October 29, 1866, BARNETT RENNER, Sen., aged about 86 years. The subject of this obituary notice was born near Winchester, Va., and moved to this county about the year 1830. He was the father of thirteen children, six boys and seven girls, all living except one daughter, and lived to see all his children married except one, who remained with him till his decease. His life was prolonged to see the third generation, an offspring of nearly one hundred souls. He was a kind hearted husband, and beloved by all who knew him. For several months previous to his death he suffered the most excruciating pain, which he bore with patience, considering his age and the disease. But relief at last came, and without a groan or a struggle he calmly fell alseep. He left a comforting hope with his friend who were with him in his last hours, that he has gone to rest in Jesus. Death, thou hast conquered me, And by thy darts am slain, But Jesus Christ has conquered thee, And I shall live again. May 8, 1867 --------------------------------------- DEATH OF GEO. E. MINOR, ESQ. It becomes our painful duty to record the very sudden and unexpected death of one of our nearest and dearest personal friends - GEORGE E. MINOR, Esq. About 11 o'clock Monday night, while sitting by our fire, we were startled by a cry of alarm, and upon rushing to the sleeping apartment of Mr. Minor and his family, (we occupied parts of the same house with him,) we found him on his bed struggling in the arms of death, and surrounded by his frightened and afflicted family. Medical aid was immediately sent for, and during the remainder of the night every possible effort was made to save him, but in vain. About 5 1/2 o'clock on Tuesday morning he expired, surrounded by his family and friends. Thus in the brief space of six hours a robust, hale and hearty man, in the very prime of manhood, is snatched away, leaving his friends to wonder and sorow. As we have said above, the deceased was one of our most true and tried personal friends, and we bow in the deepest sorrow to the dispensation that takes him from us. Minor was truly the noblest work of God - an honest man, and as such he was respected and esteemed by all who really knew him. He leaves a devoted wife and three little children to mourn their sudden and irreparable loss. Mr. Minor was aged about 36 years. His funeral will take place from his late residence at 3 o'clock, P. M., to-day (Wednesday). May 8, 1867 --------------------------------------- Democratic Meeting, Held at Mount Morris, Saturday, May 4, 1867. About 2 o'clock, P. M., a respectable member of the citizens of Perry and adjacent townships, assembled on the pavement opposite Mr. Burris's, after which the following officers were appointed by acclamation: President - JACOB SHRIVER. Vice Presidents - Joseph R. Donley, Jos. Connor, Esq., George Kussart, Esq. Secretary - Dissisway South. Commitee on Resolutions - D. L. Donly, A. F.Ammons, Samuel Evans, John Cowell, John Lemley, David John, Philip Hunt, Isaiah Faddis, Daniel Donley, Esq., Eli Rose, Esq. After which the following resolutions were adopted: WHEREAS, the present burthened condition of the farmers and mechanic of the country, brought about by the extravagance of the dominant political party in power, requires, in the language of President Johnson, "economy and retrenchment in every department of the Government," not only in the legislative and judicial departments, but even down to counties and townships; therefore, Resolved, That we shall henceforth vote for no man who is not in favor of a reduction of the salaries of office holders to the standard before the war. Resolved, That it is the duty of the Commissioners of Greene county to reduce the fees of the office of County Treasurer to at most seven hundred dollars a year, which would make him at least seven dollars instead of twenty-five dollars per day for his services. Resolved, That it is the duty of the taxpayers of Greene county to awaken to their interest, especially when we have such enormous levies for county purposes. Resloved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Waynesburg Messenger. May 8, 1867 --------------------------------------- GREENE COUNTY, SS. JAMES WELLS, Adm'r C.F.A. March 17, 1869 --------------------------------------- Our readers will be sorry to learn that our friend and fellow citizen, Justus F. Temple, Esq., and his very excellent lady, have both been very much indisposed for the last week or two. June 1, 1870 --------------------------------------- ACCIDENT. - On Monday, the 30th ult., two horses attached to a buggy, belonging to Hewitt & Myers, ran off from about Hook's Mill, East of town, and just as they came on the pike by the toll gate, the buggy was upset, throwing Tom Kirby, the only occupant, out in the road. The horses ran on toward town, one of them becoming detached from the buggy. The other horse and buggy were both precipitated over the stone bridge, at the lower end of town. The fall of 15 or 20 feet completely wrecked the buggy, and so injured the horse that it died in an hour or so. June 1, 1870 --------------------------------------- From Dr. T. W. Ross, we learn that on Sabbath afternoon last, a daughter of George Graham, of Franklin township, was thrown from her horse, while on her way home from church, and had her leg broken, near the ankle. The accident, we learn, was caused by [unreadable] running their horses on the [unreadable] Miss Graham, causing her horse to runaway. Many ugly accidents result from such thoughtless conduct on the part of boys and young men. June 1, 1870 --------------------------------------- A sad and very painful accident happened in this place on Thursday last, by which a little son on John Redman (colored) had his leg below the knee terribly crushed. Several little boys were lifting at a very heavy wagon frame, when it fell and caught the little fellow's leg beneath it, crushing it as above stated. The fractured limb was set by Drs. Blachley and Cross. The little sufferer and his parents (who are poor, but honest and industrious) have the sympathy of the whole neighborhood. A collection might be taken up in each of our churches for their benefit without any violation of Christian duty. June 1, 1870 --------------------------------------- TRIBUTE OF RESPECT. At a call meeting of General Greene Lodge, No. 493 I. O. of O. F., held at Jefferson, May 28, 1870, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted: WHEREAS, It has pleased Almighty God to remove from among us our beloved brother, F. P. Moudy, by death this morning at 5 o'clock; therefore, Resolved, That we receive with deep regret the announcement of the death of Brother F. P. Moudy, late a member of this Lodge. Resloved, That the members of this Lodge manifest their respect for our deceased brother by wearing the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved, That in the death of Brother F. P. Moudy the Church has lost a Christian follower, the Order a zealous and worthy Brother, the community a good citizen. Resolved, That this Lodge, with the invited brothers of other Lodges, attend his funeral to-morrow at 10 o'clock A. M. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be furnished each of the county papers for publication, and that a copy be handed the family of our deceased brother, extending to them the deepest sympathy in this their hour of sore affliction. SYL. SMITH, JOHN REX, J. G. FORDYCE, Com. June 1, 1870 --------------------------------------- DIED, In Graysville, Greene county, Pa., on Friday, April 29th, 1870, JAMES WILLIE McKANNA ALLUM, only son of Jas. P. and Jennie R. Allum, aged 2 years, 10 months and one day. "Willie" was an unusually intelligent and interesting child, a favorite with, and beloved by all who knew him. But Death, the stern messenger who will at some time visit us all, has called him, thus early, to his home in Heaven. His death was very sudden, having the day previous to his demise, been at his usual out door sports. The afflicted and bereaved parents have the consolation of reflecting that what is their loss is his gain, and that "our Willie" is now in the fold and companionship of that Christ who once said, "Let little children come unto me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." The funeral services at the house were by Rev. H. K. Craig, of Waynesburg, and the remains were deposited in Beulah Church grave yard, in the presence of a large concourse of people. J. W. H.
